Technology Overview

Advancing Cost-Competitive Electrolytic Hydrogen

Helix Hydrogen is developing next-generation electrolyzer technology designed to improve the economic viability of hydrogen production for distributed and pilot-scale deployment.

Electrolytic hydrogen offers a pathway to low-emissions energy systems, but widespread adoption has been constrained by capital cost, system efficiency, and deployment complexity. Helix is engineering solutions specifically focused on improving cost-per-kilogram performance while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure and use cases.

Our development strategy prioritizes practical deployment over laboratory demonstration.

Technical Focus

Helix’s approach centers on:

  • Improving system efficiency and operational stability from the electrode level

  • Reducing cost drivers within electrolyzer architecture

  • Designing for modular scalability

  • Enabling integration into distributed and off-grid environments

Rather than optimizing for theoretical peak performance alone, Helix is focused on real-world operating conditions — including variable load environments, pilot-scale installations, and distributed production scenarios.

Current Development Status

Technology Readiness Level (TRL): 4At TRL 4, key components and subsystems have been validated in laboratory environments. Core technical principles have been demonstrated, and system architecture has been defined.

Next Milestone: TRL 5 Demonstration

Helix is advancing toward TRL 5, which includes validation of the integrated system in a relevant environment.

Planned advancements include:

  • Integrated prototype refinement

  • System performance validation

  • Operational durability testing

  • Preparation for pilot-scale deployment

A demonstration-ready unit is targeted for late November, contingent on continued development progress and applied grant support.

Deployment Pathway

Helix is engineering its system with pilot deployment in mind.

Target environments include:

  • Hydrogen distribution partnerships

  • Microgrid and off-grid applications

  • Distributed production pilots

  • Event-based or temporary power applications

By focusing on deployment-readiness early in the development cycle, Helix aims to shorten the pathway from prototype to commercial validation.

Commercialization Strategy

Grant funding directly supports:

  • Advancement from TRL 4 to TRL 5

  • Prototype refinement

  • Pilot preparation

  • Early commercial engagement

Helix anticipates initial revenue through system sale or lease models associated with pilot deployment.

Guiding Principle

Hydrogen adoption will not scale without economic viability.

Helix Hydrogen is focused on engineering systems that make electrolytic hydrogen financially practical for real-world buyers — accelerating deployment through disciplined technical execution.
